Andy, my my neighbor has just put up a garden pergola. I was convinced one would be a great entertaining feature in my garden. However, I was shocked by the bill for his pergola kit. That was way outwith my finances.

Unfazed, I searched the web. There are numerous of free pergola plans online but I could not come across one in the size I needed. Also the drawings and how to build guidelines looked scant.

I priced the materials to ensure it could be built within my budget. I was convinced I could build a pergola. And I did. In just one weekend!

Building a pergola was not as hard as I thought. And that was mainly thanks to the clear, step by step guidelines. I did not have any of those scratching my head not understanding where something fitted moments!

Here are my top tips if you would like to build a pergola:
  1. Clarify why you would like a pergola. For example is it to provide some shade, as a spot to entertain or as a garden focal point?
  2. Choose the location carefully. Look at the garden space from all the angles. It might be a fine opportunity to rearrange the garden space.
  3. Mark out the desired pergola size. Be sure it is not too out of proportion for the garden space.
  4. Look at the outlook from all garden side windows. Are you still happy with the siting?
  5. Check there are no underlying pipes and cables.
  6. And last but certainly not least, obtain the pergola plans in the exact size you require.
